The Succas Shalom suggests that it's appropriate to choose a
specific mitzvah to designate as your personal "project" to benefit
your departed's neshamah. The goal is to devote all of your
energy toward its scrupulous fulfillment, in all of its details. How
do you choose? Some options are: a mitzvah that involves physical
action, that benefits the public, one in which the departed excelled
or that was special to him, or one that you feel you need to improve
upon. These are just suggestions; adopting any mitzvah will provide
a powerful aliyah for your departed’s neshamah.
Here you'll find some suggested reading to assist you in your
mitzvah efforts.
